Up for the Cup

The first FAI Cup game I ever attended was at Richmond Park, on the 9th of January 1999.

Liam Buckley was the St. Patrick’s Athletic manager, Trevor Croly and Colin Hawkins were in his starting lineup but I actually knew very little about any of them.

I was only there to support my local team – Glenmore Celtic! Although the Leinster Senior League side were beaten 3-0 they did manage to do themselves considerable credit.

14 years later I’ll be in Inchicore on Friday this time to watch Shamrock Rovers take on St. Pat’s in a much anticipated quarter-final tie.

Liam Buckley is once again in charge of the Saints while his new adversary in the away dugout is Trevor Croly, along with his assistant Colin Hawkins.

Buckley guided First Division side Sporting Fingal to cup glory in 2009 and St. Pat’s lost last year’s final to Derry City in extra-time.

As a player Buckley lost the 1984 FAI Cup final with Rovers as well as the 1996 final with Pat’s. He scored five cup goals for the Hoops and one for Athlone Town in 1998.

Croly scored two goals in this competition, one for Drogheda in the Louth derby in 1996 and one for Pat’s against Galway in 2000.

Shelbourne manager Johnny McDonnell has suffered Cup final heartbreak both as a player and manager with St. Pat’s, losing the 1996 and 2006 finals.

The romance of the cup took on a whole new perspective in 1990 when the centre-half scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Limerick in Rathbane; he happened to be honeymooning in Limerick at the time.

McDonnell’s other cup goal came for Shamrock Rovers a couple of years later while Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny played just one FAI Cup game in his career.

Kenny was a late substitute for Home Farm in their 2-0 win over Glebe North at the Markets Green, Balbriggin on 9 March 1994.

Sligo Rovers boss Ian Baraclough spent his entire playing career in England and Derry City gaffer Declan Devine was with the northerners for one season in 1996/97.

Derry were attempting to complete the double but tragedy struck with the sudden death of Tony O’Dowd’s younger brother just days before the final.

Devine stepped up to take his place in goal and Shelbourne scored twice in the last ten minutes to take the trophy.

Finn Harps manager Peter Hutton was also in the Derry team that day, one of six FAI Cup finals that he has played in.

Hutton has three winners’ medals with Derry from 1995, 2002 and 2006 and he was also on the losing side in 1994 and 2008.

He scored a total of six goals, two of them at Lansdowne Road, and his father also Peter played in Finn Harps’ sole triumph in 1974.

Hutton will be up against Mick Cooke of Drogheda United tomorrow tonight, who played in Drogheda’s 1971 final defeat and was an unused substitute when St. Pat’s were beaten in 1974.

Cooke netted two cup goals during his spell with Shamrock Rovers and another for Galway Rovers.
